I'm Still Here...and I've Published My Book!

No I haven't been around, but at least you know what I've been doing - dreams take struggle, but at least this one has not been deferred!

If you do not know, I've published my first children's book called "Victorianne Phoenix is a Real Princess". This is based on a true story about a little girl seeking to understand her self-worth. Although this story is written about an African-American girl whose story begins with her natural hair and her ideas of beauty, her journey exposes her not only to women that reflect her own heritage, but also the images of women from cultures around the world. The recent unrest in our country over race and stereotypes lead me to believe that we have to take steps to eradicate racism at the root. Introducing children early on to our differences and then teaching them to acknowledge and respect them in a controlled environment builds empathy.  We have seen what happens when people have no knowledge about our issues as African-Americans in this country and therefore simply cannot relate to our struggle.  Our struggle must be an American struggle, a
human struggle…Victorianne Phoenix

This book is for every teachable moment in the lives of little girls growing into womanhood. We live in a society where a woman of African descent is deemed the "least desirable" woman and the most negatively looked upon woman in our society as a whole. What a shame! We all play a part in that by personally subscribing to negative images about ourselves by 1. Watching reality and television shows that assist in portraying women of color in negative ways. 2. By not in MASSES, demanding for better roles in television and cinema, for settling for actress roles instead of becoming directors and writers. 3. By not calling out our very own people for disparaging women of color in song/music/video, etc. and finally for not teaching our very own girls and boys differently. We must educate ourselves, our families, about our ancestry, our history, and not forgetting world history as we will find our history touches MANY others.
